You have chosen a niche, written your audience statement and built an idea list. The biggest trap now is waking up every morning thinking, "What should I post today?" When you ask that question every day, your energy drains and the account starts to look scattered again.
The fix is a two-part system: content pillars decide what you talk about, and the format mix decides how you present it. Once both are in place, your weekly plan almost writes itself.

Content pillars are the main themes you keep coming back to on your account. For most new accounts, 3-4 pillars is ideal. Fewer feels repetitive; more feels scattered. Each pillar answers a different need your audience has.
A combination that usually works is teach, inspire, connect, promote. Teaching content delivers value and gets saved; inspiring content creates an emotional pull and gets shared; connecting content shows you as a person; promoting content shows your product, service or project.
| Pillar | Purpose | Example (neighbourhood cafe) | Best format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teach | Practical value, saves | "5 mistakes people make brewing filter coffee at home" | Carousel, Reels |
| Inspire | Emotion, shares | The cafe opening at 7am, set to calm music | Reels |
| Connect | Trust, warmth | How the barista got into coffee | Stories, Reels |
| Promote | Show the product or service | New seasonal menu, weekend event | Carousel, Stories |
On a new account, "promote" should be the smallest slice. In the 0-10K stage people don't know you yet, and sales-led content tends to reach far fewer people than value-led content. As a rough guide, no more than one in four posts should be promotional.
Open the 100-idea list from Lesson 1 and tag each idea with a pillar. If a pillar has very few ideas, strengthen it or merge it with another. If one pillar dominates the list, that is probably your account's real identity already; accepting that is a strategy too.
Once your pillars are set, give each one a short name and colour-code them in your content calendar. Seeing at a glance which pillar is being neglected is the easiest way to keep the balance. For example, if you haven't posted any "connect" content for three weeks, followers start seeing you as just an information source and the account loses its personality.
Instagram's formats don't all do the same thing. Knowing what each one is for lets you plan your week on purpose. Instagram executives have said in various public statements that Reels play an important role in reaching people who don't follow you, while Stories mainly nurture the relationship with existing followers. These balances can shift over time, so confirm them against your own insights.
| Format | Main job | Who it reaches | Importance for a new account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reels | Get discovered, reach new people | Mostly non-followers | Very high |
| Carousel | Deep value, saves and shares | Followers and Explore | High |
| Stories | Build connection, start conversations | Mostly existing followers | Medium, ongoing |
| Single image | Announcements, one strong frame | Mostly followers | Low |
| Live | Deep engagement, Q&A | Active followers | Later |
The rhythm below is a suggestion, not a rule. For a solo creator it is a realistic starting point: 3 Reels, 2 carousels and a few Stories on most days. If you have less time, start with 2 Reels and 1 carousel; consistency matters more than frequency. Starting with 7 posts a week and quitting in week three gives a far worse result than keeping up 3 posts a week for months.
Most "best time to post" lists you find online are broad guesses and may not fit your audience. An account speaking to university students and one speaking to parents commuting to work in the morning don't have viewers active at the same hours. At the start, think through your target person's day, pick two or three sensible time slots and rotate your posts between them. As your following grows, the audience section of your professional dashboard will show when your followers are most active; from then on, decide based on your own data instead of guesses. Remember, timing is fine-tuning; if the content is weak, the right hour won't save it.
Don't spend an idea on one format only. The core of a strong carousel can become a 30-second Reel, and the behind-the-scenes of that Reel can become a Story. Presenting the same idea in different formats multiplies your effort and reaches different people.
An idea on its own is not a post. To make it publishable, you combine three parts: which pillar it belongs to, which format it will take and the hook that will catch the viewer in the first second.
[Pillar] + [Format] + [Hook] = Post
Example: Teach + Carousel + "4 mistakes you make drying curly hair (number 3 is very common)"
Trends can help, but they are not a strategy on their own. When you use a trending sound or format, your post should still serve your niche and audience statement. Otherwise the people who arrive through the trend won't find what they are looking for on your profile, and they won't follow.
You now know what each format is for; it is time to dig into the strongest discovery tool. In the next lesson we will look at why some Reels travel to thousands of people and how watch time, shares and saves work as signals.
Define your 3-4 content pillars, tag every item on your idea list with a pillar and draft a posting calendar for the next two weeks. Include at least one named recurring series.
